Earth and Fire

Into the fire!

2788. Only the handicapped live on Earth. While everyone else uses interstellar portals to travel between hundreds of colony worlds, 17-year-old Jarra is among the one in a thousand people born with an immune system that cannot survive on other planets. Sent to Earth at birth to save her life, abandoned by her parents to be raised a ward of Hospital Earth, she lives a regimented life in one of their impersonal residences.

Tortured by the knowledge the stars are forever out of her reach, Jarra dreams of learning to fly a plane so she can at least make the skies of Earth her own. She gets her chance to become a qualified pilot, but learning to fly turns out to be far more difficult and dangerous than she imagined, sending her into a literal trial by fire.

EARTH AND FIRE is a prequel novella, set in the distant future of the Earth Girl trilogy (Earth Girl, Earth Star, and Earth Flight). This can be read either before or after the main trilogy. New readers will get a first introduction to Jarra and her 28th century future Earth with this novella, while existing readers will learn more about Jarra’s past and what made her into the girl they met in EARTH GIRL.

Note that the first two chapters of EARTH AND FIRE have appeared as the title story in the EARTH 2788 short story collection. The other fifteen chapters are entirely new.

Why is it $4.99 on Amazon which is more expensive than other sites?

    • I assume you’re talking about US dollars and Amazon.com here. I think if you’re seeing a price of $4.99 on Amazon.com and a lower price on other ebook sales channels, then you may be one of the people buying from Amazon.com but living outside the USA in a country that gets caught up in a special Amazon.com pricing policy. I’m a bit confused by this pricing policy myself. It’s rather complicated so apologies if my explanation isn’t perfect.

Firstly, I’m attempting to keep the list price of EARTH 2788 and EARTH AND FIRE consistent for each currency across all ebook sales channels. For the USA, I’ve set the list price of EARTH AND FIRE to be $2.99 on all ebook sales channels including Amazon.com.

I was confused by a few oddities in my Amazon author sales report, and discovered this in Amazon’s frequently asked questions:-
1-9. Why is the offer price of my books higher than the one I chose when I uploaded to KDP?
If you (or your readers) are outside the U.S., our offer price may be higher than your list price due to international operating costs. Please note that sales to customers outside of the 70% territories receive royalties of 35% of the list price.

What this means is if a reader lives in certain countries and buys from Amazon.com, then Amazon will pay me less money for the sale. In some cases, Amazon also decides to charge the reader a higher price. Obviously I’d prefer it if this didn’t happen, but it appears to be beyond my control.

If you are seeing a price of $4.99 on Amazon.com, then you’re caught in this situation. If you’re also seeing a price of $2.99 on places like iTunes and Kobo then it’s because they don’t have this pricing policy and I’d suggest buying from them. You may well find yourself in the same situation with some other authors’ books as well.

Are the ebook short stories ever going to be made available in a printed format? I am not a fan of ebooks at all but really want to read the short stories.

    • I’m aiming to make the short story collection available in a printed format, but doing this means arranging for the right format text and cover art. I probably won’t have time to do that until the beginning of 2016. There’s also a possibility that the novellas may eventually be available in a printed format, with two novellas appearing together as a single printed book.

      • An update on this. It turns out that the novellas are long enough to be individual paperbacks, but Hera 2781 will have to wait until there’s something logical for it to be grouped with. Frontier is now available as a paperback. I’m aiming to have Earth and Fire as well as Earth 2788 available in paperback by the end of the year.
