Set in the Hive Future

Being a telepath means your greatest strength can also be your greatest weakness.

Eighteen-year-old Amber is the youngest of the five telepaths who protect the hundred million citizens of one of the great hive cities of twenty-sixth century Earth. Her job is hunting down criminals before they commit their crimes, but this time she must face multiple challenges.

While preparing to celebrate the New Year festival of family, Amber’s team have to deal with a case where the stakes grow increasingly personal. The help of Amber’s borderline telepath counsellor, Buzz, becomes crucial.

Borderline is the fourth book in the Hive Mind series. Further books are planned to follow.

I’m two readthroughs in! Would love to have a discussion with other people here, if that’s okay. Is it okay if I post a bunch of spoiler-y observations? I could also dump them elsewhere and link them here.

    • I’d rather keep true spoilers off the comments here because they can obviously mess up the fun of other readers. Could you use the contact form or whatever to send me a few more details. Then I can make a proper judgement on the best way to handle it.

Of course, I very much understand 🙂 What I have includes very blatant spoilers, so I’d imagine that wouldn’t work at all.

Hence I’ll just say that I enjoyed this new glimpse of Amber’s world! 😀

      • I’m glad you enjoyed seeing a new glimpse of the Hive future, and I’ll consider the discussion issue for the future. There may be an alternate solution.

  2. I’ve just added a new page to the website that’s very relevant to the discussion issue. Please take a look at the new page under Fun Extras.

I love the Hive Future series! This installment continues the excellent narrative and story line. Amber’s world is so different from ours, but with enough similarities that it can be related to. I hope to read the next one soon.

    • Hi Summer. I’m so pleased you’re enjoying my Hive Future books. Sadly, they are so long and involved that I can only managed to write one a year. If you’d like to make sure that you don’t miss future books then you can sign up for my newsletter, otherwise look out for one at Christmas.

I just bought the kindle version! (A bit sadly, since I’ve been buying the paper versions and prefer them, but the cost was a bit too high this time.) And I am also very happy because I always love your books and can’t wait to start!

I wasn’t sure if your links to Amazon were affiliate links, but bought through here with hopes that they are.

I wanted to let you know that your new installment story The End, and the New Beginning has brought me so much joy and happiness. Reading your writing and Jarra’s story have turned around some challenging days this winter. I love it! And I am in awe of the way you write, especially in this unintentional(?) serial fashion! Thank you so much. It is a wonderful gift.

Ps. At 52, I am another one of your appreciative non-“young adult” readers…

    • Hi Jennifer.

I feel that young adult readers aren’t really defined by age but by attitude. I’m writing for anyone, whatever their age, who has a joyous imagination and a love of adventure and fantastic worlds. I’m sure that you fit right in there. 🙂

Yes, it’s sad that the paperback of Borderline is so expensive. The problem with physical books, especially print on demand, is that I must charge higher than the basic manufacturing cost of the paperback, and the number of pages is a big factor in that cost. Borderline is a long story, and I wanted to keep the same font size rather than making it unreadably tiny to reduce the page count. That means the paperback of Borderline is a hundred pages longer than Telepath, with a correspondingly higher price.

With the ebook, I could make the decision to keep the same price as the earlier books, so it made sense for you to go for that much cheaper option.

I’ve been having a challenging time lately too. I know the same is true of a lot of people. If I can take refuge in writing my stories, and other people can take refuge in reading them, then it’s a win for all of us. I expected The End, and the New Beginning to have two or three parts, but Jarra has a way of taking charge of things. Writing something serial fashion like this, posting each part as I write it with no idea where the story is going, obviously has risks. It’s been a lot of fun though, and we seem to be heading into a conclusion at last. There’ll probably be some tidying up to do before I publish it properly as part of the Earth Prime collection, but hopefully not too much.
